Treasure Chats are our version of TED Talks. These powerful discussions are produced by black males for the betterment of black males. Both educators and parents are invited to participate.

Each month, a different dynamic speaker will present on one of the Treasure Hunt topics. The Chats end with a Question & Answer session to ensure participants will have the opportunity to engage with each speaker.

Establishing Impactful Relationships with Black Male Youths

Yusuf is a servant leader who believes, regardless of the circumstances, each student can achieve at high levels. His degrees include a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies from State University of New York at Cortland and a Master of Professional Studies in African and African American Studies from Cornell University. 

In 2010, Yusuf applied and was accepted into the New Leaders Aspiring Principal’s Program. He then served as a Resident Principal at Bronx Bridges Academy and the Acting Principal at the Benjamin Banneker Academy for Community Development. 

As the previous Principal of City Polytechnic High School of Engineering, Architecture and Technology in Brooklyn, Yusuf dramatically decreased student suspensions and increased student achievement. Currently, he is the founding Principal of the STEAM Academy at Carver in Atlanta. As a TED Talks speaker, this family man is the perfect choice to begin our series of Treasure Chats.

Marcus has written several articles for various publications and is the author of the books "Because My Teacher Said I Can" and "School and Life Living in the MIddle". 

Marcus's numerous awards include the Pinnacle Exemplar Leadership Award, Community Outreach Award, Principal of the Year, Teacher of the Year and Early Leader in Education. Cultivating a Strong Moral Compass In Young African American Men

Aric is a young, innovative, servant of God with a multifaceted purpose in ministry. He is a preacher of the Gospel, a scholar of religion and a recording artist. He has worked with Grammy award winning artists and producers.

Aric has a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Morehouse College and a Master of Divinity from Harvard University. He served the Memorial Church of Harvard University as the 1st Master of Divinity Seminarian for Black Student Ministries at Harvard. He is also the former Vice-President of the Harvard Graduate Council for the University.

Under the leadership of his grandfather, Rev. Timothy Flemming, Sr., Aric previously served as the Youth Pastor at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Atlanta. His most recent calling encompasses the founding of UNDRGRND Church, a worshipping virtual faith community that seeks to actively minister to the oppressed in society.

Circumventing the Prison System and Moving Straight Towards Success

Duncan is the current Captain for the newly formed Douglas County School System Police Department. As a seasoned law enforcement professional with experience in both traditional and school-based policing, he is known for his genuine approach to community policing and the empowerment of today’s youth. 

Duncan most recently served as Sergeant for the Atlanta Public Schools Police Department, where he partnered with the Office of the Fulton County Solicitor's 'Guns Down Heads Up' Initiative as well as Georgia Tech’s CEISMC. He co-founded the Young Men of Carver Leadership Academy at the STEAM Academy of Carver. 

Duncan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Stony Brook University. During his downtime, he prefers to don his superhero persona as a husband and father of three.

Transforming School Culture to Restore Black Males

For over 13 years, Jovan has served as an educator and advocate for students in urban settings. He recognizes the potential in all students and has vast experience with putting the necessary plans in place to turn around schools that are struggling to help their students succeed.

Jovan has a Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Science in Educational Evaluation and Research, and Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership and Administration all from Georgia State University. His academic achievements prepared him for his previous roles as Teacher, Instructional Coach, Dean of Academics and School Improvement Specialist with the Georgia Department of Education.

Currently, Jovan is the Principal of Thomasville Heights Elementary School (THES) in Atlanta where he leads with innovation, determination and inspiration. With Jovan at the helm, the proud faculty and staff of THES serve its students and community with the dignity they most assuredly deserve.

Helping Young Black Males Be the Best They Can Be

Nelson serves as the proud Principal of Lovejoy High School in Hampton, GA. He is known to be a well-respected leader among colleagues and the community he serves. With over 20 years of devoted educational service, he consistently moves toward purposeful instructional outcomes for students to receive educational access and equity.

Previously, Nelson served as Assistant Principal at Carver High School, Brown Middle School and Chapel Hill Middle School as well as Implementation Specialist for 9-12 College and Career Readiness for Atlanta Public Schools. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Instrumental Music Education from Delaware State University and a Master of Science from Jacksonville State University. Nelson received various awards and commendations during his career, which include Teacher of the Year Finalist, Citation of Excellence award from the National Band Association, Governor’s Commendation for Outstanding Musical Leadership, Outstanding Administrator Award, and Who’s Who Among American Teachers.

In addition to serving as an educator, Nelson enjoys spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Render also enjoys composing music, playing the trumpet, golfing, reading, cooking, creating media art, producing voice-over commercials, mentoring, and volunteering during the holidays.

After You've Answered the Call

Over twenty years ago, Eugene entered the profession of education with one mission in mind – to “give life.” Because he knows the immense value of a sound education, he has sought to give life to families and children throughout his professional journey. He began his career as a middle school English Language Arts teacher after which he was promoted to principal. Currently, Eugene is an associate pastor and astute businessman who makes an impact through service, meticulous speaking, writing and philanthropy. Today, one of the ways he gives life is by helping young people learn and develop their knowledge for business and entrepreneurship as well as identify their career pathway. As the Founder/CEO of Upward Bound Learning, he is able to provide such support. Furthermore, he is a nationally-certified trainer in the areas of classroom management, student engagement and student motivation.

Eugene has received numerous awards, including The Vanguard Distinguished Principal’s Award for his efforts in providing a sound foundation for learning and achievement as well as Teacher of the Year multiple times. He successfully matriculated through William Carey University, Grand Canyon University and Jacksonville Theological Seminary. His degrees are in educational leadership, business and ministry.  Currently, he lives in Atlanta with his wife of 21 years. They are active members of their church as well as proud parents of two sons who are budding young entrepreneurs.
